Dixie History
Named after a prospector whose nickname was Dixie, you will find a region teeming with history! Founded in 1862 when gold was first discovered along Crooked Creek, the town of Dixie boasted several thousand residents at the peak of the gold rush. Today Dixie is home to approximately 20 full-time residents.
When you visit Dixie and explore our region you can still find remnants of those early gold-rush days. Gold mines, dredging operations, and miles of hand-dug ditches that brought water to mine sites can be found. Even today you can dip your pan in almost any creek and come up with some gold!
